How to Choose a Home Safe: A Simple Buying Guide

Passports, birth certificates, cash, jewelry, a spare set of keys. Every home has things that are hard or impossible to replace. A home safe keeps them in one protected place. But safes come in many sizes and lock types, so here is a simple guide to choosing the right one.

1. Decide what you will store

Make a quick list before you shop. Documents and passports need a flat shelf. Jewelry and cash need less space. Laptops or larger items need a bigger box. As a rule, buy one size bigger than you think you need, because safes fill up fast.

2. Pick the lock type

  • Keypad: you open it with your own code. Easy to change the code, and family members can share it. Most keypad safes also come with backup keys in case the batteries run out.
  • Biometric (fingerprint): the fastest way to open it, in about a second. Good for items you need quickly. Many biometric safes, like the VEVOR Biometric Smart Security Safe, combine fingerprint, keypad and key in one.
  • Key only: simple, but you have to keep the key somewhere safe, which defeats part of the purpose.

3. Look at the build

A solid steel body and a pry-resistant door matter more than how the safe looks. Check that the bolts are thick and that the hinges are inside or protected. A heavy safe is also harder to carry away.

4. Bolt it down

Most home safes come with pre-drilled holes and anchor bolts. Use them. Bolting the safe to the floor or to a wall stud makes it much harder for someone to take the whole box. Good spots are inside a closet, under a bed frame, or in a cabinet.

5. Think about size and placement together

Measure the closet or cabinet before you buy. A compact digital security safe box comes in two sizes, 0.5 and 1.2 cubic feet, so you can match it to your space.

6. Keep your keys organized too

If you manage rentals, an office or a big family, keys get lost easily. A lockable 48-key lock box cabinet keeps every key labeled and locked in one place on the wall.

Quick checklist

  • List what you will store and choose one size up.
  • Choose keypad, fingerprint, or both.
  • Check for a steel body and backup keys.
  • Bolt it down in a hidden spot.
  • Write down your code and keep the backup keys away from the safe.
